• Chemistry:

Chemistry is a field of science that studies the properties of matter and how matter interacts with energy.

Chemistry is a physical science and is closely connected to physics. It plays a key role in other major sciences such as biology, Earth science, and physics.

    Activities:

Whenever possible, activities/labs are used to demonstrate concepts and help students apply the learning to real-world scenarios.

    Assessments

Major assessments (tests) will be given approximately 2-3 times each 9 weeks.  Students will be required to complete each test in the allotted class time period.

    Make-up Work

A student will be responsible for obtaining and completing the make-up work in a satisfactory manner and within one week. A student who does not make up assigned work within the time allotted by the teacher will receive a grade of zero for the assignment.

    Late Work

It is essential that you turn your homework in on time.  The maximum grade awarded for a late paper is 70. No late papers will be accepted after the unit test.

Absent for a Test or Re-Test

If you are absent for the review day before a quiz or test you will still be required to take the quiz or test if it was previously announced.  If you are absent for a test, you have one week to make it up from the time it was given (district policy) otherwise it will turn into a zero. Students may retest a test that has a score below a 70.  Students must first attend tutoring prior to the retest to completely correct the original test.  The maximum grade you will receive on a retest is a 70.  A failing quiz may also be retaken to improve the grade to a max of 70. Daily grades are final, no reworking will be allowed for these assignments.

    Grading Policies:

    50% Major Grade (Tests)

50% Minor Grade (Homework, in class assignment, quizzes, daily grade, group particpation etc.) NOTE: quizzes are weighted as 2 minor grades as they will comprise TWO sections, for example calculator and non-calculator.

    Extra Credit

No extra credit opportunities will be given.  It is essential that you do your work and to ask for help when you need assistance.

    Materials (suggested):

      • Loose leaf 3-ring binder with a Chemistry section
      • Spiral or supply of lined paper
      • Graph Paper
      • Pencils
      • Grading Pens
      • Colored Pencils or Fine Point Markers
      • Highlighters

    Homework:

Homework will be assigned every lesson and collected every week.  Homework will be graded on completion, accuracy, or a combination of both.

    Tutoring:

If you need help, please ask.

I am available before school beginning at 8:00 am.  I am also available after school, by appointment only.  NO lunch time tutoring is available.

    Class Rules:

    1. Respect yourself, others, and the teacher at all times.
    2. Bring all required supplies and homework assignments to class every day.
    3. Give me your best effort on a daily basis.
    4. No cell phones/ear buds - cell phones and ear buds must be placed in the student's bag at the start of class and stay in the bag for the duration of the lesson.

    Class Procedures:

    1. ALL work should be done in pencil.
    2. ALWAYS show your work, no credit will be given for answers only.
    3. When arriving to class, sharpen your pencil, put away your cell phone and ear buds, take out your notes/homework and start on the warm-up of the day.

    Calculator Information:

The Mathematics Department at Boerne High School will be using the TI-Nspire CX graphing calculator to teach mathematical concepts in all classes.  The school board, local service clubs and others have contributed so that the students will have this opportunity to use technology and be able to do non-routine extended problems in class.  The replacement cost of each calculator is approximately $150. Each student is required tro complete the 'Calculator Agreement Form" prior to using the calculator.

    AP Physics 1:

The emphasis of the course is divided between developing a conceptual understanding of the major topics of physics, developing problem solving skills in those topic areas and developing practical skills in investigating those topic areas. Algebra and trigonometry will be used continually throughout. Emphasis will be put on understanding the theories at hand and identifying them in everyday life. A laboratory component accompanies the classroom element in the course. Students will be expected to undertake and report on laboratory activities related to the topics in the class.

    Activities

Whenever possible, activities, demonstrations,  experiments and simulations will be used to demonstrate concepts and help students apply the learning to real-world scenarios.

    Assessments

Major assignments (tests, projects and extended labs) will be given approximately 2-3 times each 9 weeks.  Students will be required to complete each test in the allotted class time period, labs should be completed by the due date assigned by your teacher.
