The social studies department seeks to improve student achievement in the social studies, ensure a systematic and equitable program for all students, and assist K-12 teachers in their mission to develop civic efficacy in all students. As educators, we strive to create patriotic students who are tolerant, geographically literate, and able to function as responsible, productive citizens in our democratic, pluralistic society.

Purpose

American principles are based on the fundamental ideals summed up by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence as the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  In order to secure these rights it is important to have an educated, informed and engaged citizenry. The founding fathers, such as Jefferson and Franklin, argued for the necessity of education if the new republic was to succeed.

At its foundation, the Social Studies curriculum is the study of humanity and the reasons behind the choices we make.  Whether studying history, economics, psychology, government or any of the social sciences, the ultimate question remains the same: Why do individuals, groups, societies, or governments behave the way they do? It is in this understanding that we find the power to affect change, in our home, our community and our world.

The Texas education code states:

“A primary purpose of the public school curriculum is to prepare thoughtful, active citizens who understand the importance of patriotism and can function productively in a free enterprise society with appreciation for the basic democratic values of our state and national heritage.” (1)

“Throughout social studies in Kindergarten-Grade 12, students build a foundation in history; geography; economics; government; citizenship; culture; science, technology, and society; and social studies skills. The content, as appropriate for the grade level or course, enables students to understand the importance of patriotism, function in a free enterprise society, and appreciate the basic democratic values of our state and nation…” (2)

The Social Studies curriculum at Boerne Independent School meets and exceeds all of these expectations.  It embodies the knowledge, concepts, skills, and practices that will enable our students to face and overcome challenges, be responsible citizens, demonstrate sound character to fulfill the mission and live the vision of Boerne Independent School District.
